Michael Frits bei Jo Jonathan
There are no translations available.

20:00 Uhr.
Euer Alois

25 years of blues with the Jo Jonathan Band

25_Jahre

jojo1
At November 1st, 1986, I played the first Jo Jonathan concert.

"Just a few days ago I received a mail of a long term Jo Jonathan fan. That he saw me earlier with the Jo Jonathan than 1986. It was at a gig in Kapsweyer Open Air, summer 1985. He even remembered the amplifier and guitar that I played, since he is a guitarist, too.  Another gig mentioned by a friend in Karslruhe in 84 is not in my mind anymore and i can´t remember it, since in these days we still played with Melophon. The first gig that I am sure of because I still have the poster was on November 1st 1986 in the famous Outsider in Kandel.
Thanx a lot for your research work and if you a have tickets, posters or other date regarding Jo Jonathan I would be glad to hear from you.

Yours Jo

The Jo Jonathan Biography

The band was originally a classical blues rock trio with me playing guitar and singing, drummer and bassist..
My musical concept was simple but tasteful. I covered the blues rock classics of the 50, 60 and early 70ties in my own style and leave enough space for inprovisation. I started to play in bands when I was 13 before that I learned the trumpet and played in youth orchestras brass music. When a schoolmate approached me to play drums in his band. He new that my father had a drumset at home so I was just the only one he knew with drums available. I never played any drums before but to play in a band I didn´t hesitate a second and played drums in the band.
1967 were the halcyon days of Rock´n Roll.  Through my sisters record player I knew all Beatles and other British Bands but listening for the first time to Jumping Jack Flash from the Stones really knocked me over and I knew what I wanted to do.
In 1970 I cofounded my first Rock Band named ICARUS, we played numerous gigs and were happy. In the mid seventies we split Icarus and  joined a pro band to play dinner and dance music. After a three year experience with the US Air Force I decided to study music in Germany. Those were the days when I learned to play guitar and the Instrument became my main musical source. In the end seventies I founded in Heidelberg a typical krautrock band named MELOPHON.

In the mid 80ties I started to miss my own musical tradition and did a lot of blues jamming and learned that the blues is me. After I found a suitable drummer and bassist I founded the Jo Jonathan band. Name came from my school days nickname when even teachers called me JoJo after the name of a mayor of a city in utopia. Jo Jonathan was back to my roots and the music that influenced me most. The Blues.
In the mid eighties I did the first recordings and the 3rd release "The Red Album" drew attention on the band after it´s release in 1990. Nine more albums followed and in 2010 our latest "Home Style Cooking" Next album is planned for 2012.
So the first 25 years with the Jo Jonathan band are gone not necessarily 25 more need to come but a few more years would be nice.
Thank you to all for your love and support

yours truly
